Entering the second working day of December, the trading atmosphere in the Mekong Delta provinces still maintained a slow pace. This is a sensitive “season change” time when the Autumn-Winter rice crop has ended and the Winter-Spring crop has not yet bloomed, causing local disruptions in the supply of goods. Warehouses are buying in small quantities, mainly to balance inventory and pay off old orders instead of boosting purchases like during the peak period.

Stable rice prices at the field, limited supply

Recorded at key rice granaries such as An Giang, Kien Giang and Dong Thap, the trading atmosphere on December 2 was quite quiet. Due to the transition period between the Autumn-Winter crop and the Winter-Spring crop, there is not much rice left. Traders mainly buy to pay off old orders, not interested in buying new goods in large quantities.

Fresh rice prices at the field today are at an average level, specifically:

IR 50404 rice: Fluctuates from 5,500 – 5,700 VND/kg. Although supply is low, prices have not increased due to the lack of sudden demand.

Dai Thom 8 rice: Maintains the level of 6,100 – 6,300 VND/kg, the demand for this type of rice is still quite high compared to the general level.

OM 5451 rice: Trading around 5,900 – 6,100 VND/kg.

OM 18 rice: Maintained price of 6,200 – 6,400 VND/kg.

Special rice varieties such as Japanese rice remain at a high level of 7,800 – 8,000 VND/kg, while An Giang sticky rice (fresh) is stable at 6,300 – 6,500 VND/kg.

(Note: Dry rice prices are usually higher than fresh rice in the field by about 1,500 – 2,000 VND/kg depending on the type).

Bran prices slightly decreased, raw rice remained stable

At market rice warehouses and rice wharfs in Sa Dec and Cai Be areas, raw rice and finished product prices did not fluctuate much compared to yesterday’s session.

IR 504 raw rice: 7,600 – 7,700 VND/kg.

Raw rice OM 18 / Dai Thom 8: 8,500 – 8,900 VND/kg.

Finished rice IR 504: 9,500 – 9,700 VND/kg.

Notably, the by-product of dried bran recorded a slight decrease, fluctuating from 6,800 – 7,000 VND/kg. The reason is said to be due to the abundant supply of bran from the end-of-season milling activities, while consumption demand has slowed down.

Competitive export prices

In the international market, according to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), the offering price of Vietnam’s export rice on December 2, 2025 is being adjusted at a competitive level to cope with great pressure from two main competitors, India and Thailand.

Specifically, the current asking price (FOB) is:

5% broken rice: 420 – 425 USD/ton.

25% broken rice: 390 – 395 USD/ton.

100% broken rice: 330 – 340 USD/ton.

This move to maintain competitive prices helps Vietnamese enterprises maintain market share in traditional markets in the context of many fluctuations in the global economy.

Forecast: Waiting for the “falling point” of the Winter-Spring crop

Experts say that the rice market is likely to continue to stabilize in the coming days due to the lack of strong influencing factors.

The focus of the market is currently on the Winter-Spring crop 2025-2026. It is expected that the peak harvest will begin in late December or early January next year. Only then, the abundant supply of rice can create new impulses in prices and transactions.

For farmers, drying and storing dry rice at this time can be a good option to wait for better price opportunities when warehouses need local goods before the new harvest.
